May 23: Summer Reads Freebie: In preparation for Memorial Day (which is always the unofficial summer kickoff for me), let’s rec some summer/beach reads: books to go in your beach bag, best books set in summer, books with summer-y covers, best beach reads for people who don’t enjoy contemporary/realistic reads, best beach reads for fans of X genre, etc. etc.
None comprehensive and in no particular order, but these are all summer vibe, fast, light hearted reads great for taking on vacation. Nothing too heavy or sad!
1 – Heist Society
A fast-paced trilogy about teenage art thieves that is hilarious and wonderful by one of my favorite authors of all time.
2 – We Were Liars
Mystery. Fun characters. A summer vacation home. A rich family. A romance. Its good.
3 – Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour
A bit of a sad backstory to this one. But the romance is cheesy and not an instalove, and the road trip epicness is alive and sparkling in this.
4 – Everything Everything
Again, a bit of health related sadness, and the ending is pretty hit-or-miss with most. But its well written, cute, a fast read, and the little drawings and book obsessed MC make it extra fun. Also, movie coming soon!
5 – Panic
This one is less cutesy more action – if that’s what you prefer. Fast paced, life or death games, and epic friendships.
6 – The Selection
Lighthearted, great guilty-pleasure read if you’re the sort of person who watches stuff like The Bachelor – because its essentially girls trying to win the hand of the prince. The more dystopian world building is pretty interesting, and the love triangle – while infuriating at times, but it a great no worries, kill time and enjoy it read. Vacation/summer is the time for watching TLC and Lifetime and this is basically that in book form.
7 – When Dimple Met Rishi
This just came out I think (or soon at least) and I haven’t read it – but its a cute, diverse romance everyone’s raving about taking place at a summer program. I think it’ll work.
8 – The Square Root of Summer
The MC is a bit of a physics/math nerd – which makes her relatable to me – and the whole story is cute and fairly lighthearted (with the obligatory drama and not very pervasive sad backstory as requisite in most YA).
9 – Summer Days and Summer Nights: Twelve Love Stories
A book everyone probably knows about, but felt I had to mention. Its a collection of summer-set short stories by various popular YA authors.
10 – Royce Rolls
A fast-paced, funny read. The characters were all great. You can actually read my full review here: NetGalley Review: Royce Rolls. If you guilty-pleasure watch The Kardashians – you’ll like this. Its centered on a family of reality TV stars.
Great list!

I loved We Were Lairs! I have The Selection, but I haven’t gotten around to reading it.

I really like the variety in this list. Royce Rolls does have homophobia and body shaming in it, though.
